COVID-19

 



In early December 2019, the first case of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) was identified in Wuhan, China.  The virus is thought to be natural and of animal in origin.  The disease may have come from wild bates and then spread to humans.  The first known human infections were in Wuhan, China.  The cases were mostly linked to the Wuhan seafood wholesale market. 

On Dec 18, 2019, traces of the virus was found in Milan and Turin, Italy. 

By Dec 20, 2019, there were 60 coronavirus cases in the province of Hubei, China.  By the end of the month, at least 266 people were infected.

During the early stages of the outbreak, the number of cases doubled every 7 and a half days. 

On Jan 9, 2020, the World Health Organization (WHO) announced a mysterious Coronavirus-related pneumonia in Wuhan, China.  There were 59 cases of it so far. 

On Jan 20, 2020, China reported nearly 140 new cases in one day.  By then, 6,174 people had already developed symptoms of the disease.

On Jan 20, 2020, the CDC said that three US airports (in New York, Los Angeles, and San Francisco) would begin screening for Coronavirus

On Jan 21, 2020, the CDC confirmed the first US Coronavirus case.  It was a Washington state resident who had returned from Wuhan on January 15, 2020.  At this point, the virus had killed 4 and infected over 200 in China.  

On Jan 23, 2020, 13 more people died from the virus and 300 more were infected.  China closed off Wuhan and Huanggang, locking down 18 million people.

On Jan 30, 2020, WHO declared the virus as a public health emergency of international concern.  The worldwide death toll was over 200, with over 9,800 new cases.

On Feb 3, 2020, the US declared a public health emergency due to the coronavirus outbreak.

On Feb 6, 2020, the first person in the USA died from the disease.

By Feb 10, 2020, 908 deaths due to the virus was reported in China.

On March 11, 2020, the WHO declared COVID-19 a pandemic. 

On March 19, 2020, Italy overtook China as the country with the most deaths from the virus.

By March 26, 2020, the USA had overtaken China and Italy with the highest number of confirmed cases in the world.  The majority of cases came from European travelers, rather than directly from China.

By the end of March, 2020, most US companies, such as where I worked at L3Harris, allowed their employees to work from home. 

On May 28, 2020, deaths in the US from the virus surpassed 100,000 deaths.

On June 10, 2020, the number of COVID cases hit 2 million people in the US.  

By July 7, 2020, the US surpassed 3 million COVID infections. 

On July 16, 2020, the US reported 75,600 cases of COVID in a single day. 

By Aug 17, 2020, COVID-19 was the third-leading cause of death in the US, behind heart disease and cancer.  Deaths from the virus exceeded 1,000 per day.  Total deaths nationwide exceeded 5.4 million.

On Aug 28, 2020, the first known case of COVID-19 reinfection was reported in the US.

On Sep 23, 2020, a new, more contagious strain of COVID was discovered. 

On Sep 28, 220, global deaths from the virus surpassed 1 million. 

On Oct 19, 2020, global cases of the virus topped 40 million.  More than 1.1 million people have been killed by the virus worldwide.  220,000 have died from the virus in the US.  The US remained the hardest hit country in the world.

On Nov 4, 2020, 100,000 cases were reported in one day in the US.

On Dec 11, 2020, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration issued the first emergency use for a vaccine for the prevention of COVID-19.

On Dec 29, 2020, the first US case of a new COVID-19 variant was found in Colorado.

By Feb 1, 2021, the US had administered 26.5 million vaccinations.  26.3 million people had tested positive since January 20, 2020. 

On Feb 24, 2021, over half a million lives were lost in the US to COVID-19.

By Feb 26, 2021, 50 million vaccine doses had been administered. 

Several of my relatives got COVID including my youngest brother Tommy, my brother Jerry and his daughter Kelly.  One of my tennis students got the virus from a visiting family member.. 

On March 16, 2021, I got my Johnson & Johnson vaccine shot at the Palm Bay Senior Center.

On March 19, 2021, the US had administered 100 million COVID-19 shots.  2.5 million doses are administered each day. 

On March 30, 2021, Lois Wall got her first Moderna vaccine shot in Viera.

As of April 4, 2021, 2,865,917 people have died from the COVID-19 outbreak.  There have been 131.908. 089 confirmed cases in 219 countries and territories.  In the USA, there have been 555.000 deaths and 30.7 million confirmed cases.
