L3Harris
L3Harris Technologies, formerly Harris Corporation, was founded as an automatic press company in 1895. The founder was Alfred S. Harris of Niles, Ohio. For the next 60 years, they developed lithographic processes and printing presses. In 1955, the company acquired the typesetting company called Intertype Corporation. In 1962, the company merged with Radiation Inc of Melbourne, Florida. Radiation Inc developed antennas and integrated circuits for the space program. In 1978, the company headquarters moved from Cleveland to Melbourne, Florida. In 2015, the company purchases Exelis Inc.
On June 19, 2019 Harris Corporation merged with L-3 Technologies, and the new company was called L3Harris Technologies, Inc.
In March 1997, a former civil servant (Izzy Rodriquez) had left San Antonio and Kelly AFB and went to work for Harris. On March 30, I was recruited to work at Harris on information security and was invited to Harris for interviews. At the time, I was doing information security for Trident Data Systems. However, the offer was not good enough.
In December 1997, Harris made a better offer, and I accepted going to work for Harris. On Dec 4, 1997, I moved to 906 Pine Walk Court NE, Palm Bay, Florida. I was in Information Systems Security Engineer (ISSE) at Harris. By Dec 15, 1997 I was working on a program called Thicket to look for security vulnerabilities.
In January 1998, I was developing methods for detecting computer vulnerabilities in Windows and Unix operating system. Harris decided to make it a commercial product called Security Threat & Avoidance Technology (STAT). I was the lead developer with a couple of programmers to help me out. By July 1998, we were selling STAT as a commercial product as a vulnerability assessment tool. The product could detect over 1,000 different computer vulnerabilities.
In January 1999, I became a board member of the Mitre Computer Vulnerabilities and Exposures (CVE) that categorized computer vulnerabilities by risk.
In 1999, I was awarded the Harris Outstanding Individual Contribution Engineering Award for developing STAT. I also wrote an article for DTIC Information Assurance Newsletter called How to Secure Windows NT.
In 2000 I travelled to Ottawa and Heidelberg for security conferences and demonstrated STAT.
In November 2000, I was aboard the USS Coronado out of San Diego to Mazatlan, Mexico demonstrating STAT on a navy intelligence ship.
On September 11, 2001, I was making plane reservations for Houston to demonstrated STAT to Avnet and Dynergy. Because of the terrorist attack, I had to wait until September 18, 2001 before the first commercial airplane was allowed to leave the Melbourne area.
In 2002, I was a guest speaker at the Information Systems Security Association (ISSA)in Orlando. I spoke on recent computer security incidents.
In 2003, I received a Harris Teamwork Award for the development of STAT.
In February 2004, I received a CVE Compatibility Award from Mitre at an RSA conference in San Francisco
In 2005, I received a Harris Community Volunteer Award for teaching tennis, chess, and math to local kids.
In 2006, I received a Harris Certificate of Recognition for demonstrating STAT at SANS and other conferences.
In 2007, STAT was sold to Patchlink, which became Lumension. I stayed with Harris.
In 2007, I did penetration testing on the Florida Power & Light (FPL) for Harris, finding numerous vulnerabilities. I also developed computer security requirements for the Algerian Border Security proposal.
In 2008, I travelled to Fairbanks, Alaska at Eielson AFB to work on encryption and security vulnerabilities of the Pacific Alaska Range Complex.
In 2009, I was assigned to the Maritime Division at Harris and was the Chief Computer Security Engineer for the Weather Radio Improvement Program (WRIP). I wrote their System Security Plan (SSP).
In October 2009, I passed the course in Orlando and became a Certified Information System Security Professional (CISSP).
In 2010, I did a penetration test of the Caprock Secure Network Operations Center (NOC).
In 2011, I wrote the security requirements for the NASA Space Network Ground Segment Sustainment (SGSS).
In June 2012, I was the ISSE for the Geostationary Operational Environment Satellite (GOES) and hardened all the antenna sites and ground sites in Dallas, Texas, Suitland, Maryland, Wallops, Virginia, and Fairmont, West Virginia.
In 2013, I received a Harris UXcel Award for hardening all the computer equipment and network devices for the GOES-R program.
In 2014, I wrote the Windows , Linix, and network security configuration guidelines and hardened over 1,000 hosts and networks for the GOES-R program.
In 2015, I worked on the security requirements of the Advanced Weather Interactive Processing System (AWIPS),
In June 2015, I was sent to Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates for 6 months and wrote the information security guidelines for the Emirates Land Tactical System (ELTS).
In 2016, I wrote the System Security Plan (SSP) for the GOES-R program.
In 2017, I was awarded the Harris URock Award for my work on security documentation and hardening for the GOES-R program.
In 2018, I was awarded the Harris “Outstanding Team of the Quarter” for computer security at Harris.
In 2019, I was awarded the Harris URock award for technical contributions to the Harris Security Team.
In March 2020, L3Harris asked everyone to work at home. I supported the GOES-R program by updating the GOES SSP and inventory of all GOES hosts and network devices. I helped write the Rules of Engagement (ROE) for outside penetration testing.
In 2021, I categorized and prioritized all security vulnerabilities and Problem Tracking Reports (PTRs) for the GOES program.
On March 31, 2021, I retired from L3 Harris.
